Requirements
The California Lemon Laws will place certain requirements upon pet owners. An illness which is contracted after the birth of the animal must be diagnosed within fifteen days of the date of purchase. Pet owners enjoy some flexibility in being protected for up to a year if there is a diagnosis for a congenital defect.

The infectious disease or congenital defect must be considered a costly, long term, and hazardous condition to the pet. It would have to severely impair the quality of life or be life threatening with/without treatment.
Compensation
Due to the potential for an emotional attachment that may develop from pet ownership, consumers may choose to keep, replace, or attain a refund for the animal. In addition, they are entitled to reimbursement of up to one hundred and fifty percent of the veterinary treatment for a medical condition that existed at the time of purchase.
Party at Fault
Pet Shops, Pet Dealers, and Breeders can be held responsible by the consumer for compensation and reimbursement for the animal.
